Flora (Weijia) Jiang is a Chinese filmmaker currently based in Syracuse, NY. Growing up in Xi’An, China, Jiang earned her B.B.A. from the University of Hong Kong and is currently an M.F.A. candidate in Film at Syracuse University.

With her experiential and observational sensitivity, Jiang’s narrative, experimental, and documentary work explores the intricate dynamics of intimate relationships. Her films about romantic relationships examine the pull between intimacy and independence, adventure and stability, particularly within experiences of migration and displacement. Her films about family relationships explore the desire to know those closest to us despite the distance that can persist within intimacy, as well as the struggle between familial control and the need to break free.

Jiang’s experience of migration informs her attention to geographical and emotional distance, and how displacement complicates one’s sense of home and belonging. In her documentary work, she brings these concerns into an autobiographical space, turning the camera toward herself and her family to revisit their shared and differing memories.

Across these forms, Jiang leaves room for the ineffable — those unspoken, fragile emotions — to be met with empathy and openness. What she ultimately seeks through her work — and hopes to inspire in her audience — is a quiet and profound tenderness for the multifaceted nature of human connection.
